President Benigno Aquino III had ordered national line agencies to launch a campaign urging every Filipino to vote online or via text messages for the underground river.

The report about PPUR’s overall standing was encouraging, but let's be cautious against being complacent and let's take note that only seven would be chosen among the 10 finalists.

The help of each and every Filipino citizen is very crucial at this critical juncture.

Telecommunications giants Smart and Globe have mounted a text voting campaign that offers cash prizes as much as P25 million to lucky voters.

According to its website, the New7Wonders of Nature campaign started in 2007, immediately following the successful drive to choose the man-made Official New 7 Wonders of the World.

From December 2007 to July 7, 2009, over 440 locations from more than 220 countries were nominated through a national qualification and raced to become one of the Top 77.

From the 77, the New7Wonders panel of experts supervised the selection of the 28 official candidates, which were announced on July 21, 2009.

The Official New7Wonders of Nature is now in its third and final phase, and an estimated one billion people worldwide will cast their vote for their chosen seven.
The final seven will be proclaimed based on the total number of Internet and text votes they have received.

Eamonn Fitzgerald, head of communication for New 7 Wonders, however, stressed that the winning list could still change in the final week and days.

With millions of votes still set to come in, finalists who are not in today’s top 10 could still make it into the chosen 7. The first count indicating the provisional voting result will be announced at 19:07 p.m. GMT on November 11 (3 a.m. Nov. 12 in Manila) on ww,new7wonders.com

TIDBITS FOR PUERTO PRINCESA UNDERGROUND RIVER:

The Puerto Princesa Underground River (PPUR) is an 8.2 km long navigable subterranean river that spreads directly into the sea, one of the most unique of its type.

The La Venta Geographical Association discovered remarkable findings inside PPUR which makes it truly a rich treasure the Philippines housed.

They were able to unearth unique and remarkable finds that shakes scientific discovery and human history.

It is a habitat for biodiversity conservation that includes flora and fauna, speleotherms, cave minerals, karst morphologies, and one of its greatest discovery is the 20-million-old Serenia fossil.

The Puerto Princesa Underground River was declared as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO on December 1999.

Puerto Princesa Subterranean Underground River National Park -a compact info

Puerto Princesa Subterranean Underground River National Park -a compact info
Puerto Princesa Subterranean Underground River National Park is located in the Saint Paul Mountain Range on the northern coast of the island. It is bordered by St. Paul Bay to the north and the Babuyan River to the east. It is about 50 kilometers north of the city of Puerto Princesa, Palawan. Transportation are readily available from the city to Sabang Port.

The entrance to the Subterranean River is about three hour hike from the town of Sabang depending on your pace. Since 1992 the Puerto Princesa National Park was supervised by the City Government of Puerto Princesa . The park is also known as St. Paul’s Subterranean River National Park, or St. Paul Underground River.

Tip: Beware of Monkey who snatches anything in plastic bags, it is better not to bring any food if you choose to do the monkey or jungle trail. Put on a lot of insect repellant! Warning the trail is very steep specially during wet season. So if you lack the stamina don't even dare!
In Sabang you can secure a permit to enter the Underground River @ the yellow and blue building conveniently located besides the basketball court. Downside during peak season, you might be scheduled late in the afternoon or the following day. In which case you would have to stay overnight in Sabang. Because the last trip going back to the city is at 3:00 P.M.

Sometimes if there's delay, LAST TRIP is at 4:00 P.M. depending if the jeep is full already. You could also tell the driver that you intend to come back with them.

And if worse comes to worst enjoy the beach, immerse yourself with the culture of the locals, sing in the videoke or avail of the mangroove paddleboat tour. They say it was a beautiful experience. I could not vouch it for myself though 'cuz I wasn't able to try it.

If you choose a boat ride from Sabang Port to the location of Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park ( maximum of 6 people per boat, P 700 divided by 6 is equals to P120.00/pax) 1 whole boat would cost you P 700 plus 3.00 each terminal fee. That's a total of P 718 for a group of 6 people. Prepare coins.

RECOMMENDED!!!! I saw 2 americans who wanted to go back by boat but couldn't because they took the 3 hour monkey/ jungle trail going to the Underground River. ( nagtitipid?? Maling pagtitipid ) Almost all the boats going back to Sabang Port are full.

Popularly known as the Palawan Underground River, this magnificent beauty found in Puerto Princesa, Palawan in the Philippines average around five hundred(500)tourists per day during peak season. With the more specific name of Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park, it is one of the New Seven Wonders of Nature. It was inscribed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site on December 4, 1999 similar to the Banaue Rice Terraces (in 1995).

The Palawan Underground River is a Subterranean Thrill with 8.2 kilometers of navigable river underneath a tunnel with stalactites and stalagmites. It is the world’s longest subterranean river located in Sitio Sabang. Bats and insects live inside the tunnel creating some unpleasant smell during the cruise.

A guide with a paddle-powered outrigger and a lamp takes you inside the Palawan Underground River. The local government collects a permit fee of P 150/person. To be paid in their new office in the city. The permit is inclusive of entrance fee and a 45 minute-boat ride inside the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park, plus the use of lifevest and helmet. Usually, a group of 4-6 people ride the paddle-powered outriggers going inside the Palawan Underground River. Head lamps are very useful during the trip so you can see what’s inside.

Tip: Do not ride in front of the boat, the one in front will be the one holding the lamp for the entire duration of the underground cruise.

Palawan Underground River winds through a cave before flowing directly into the South China Sea located in the western part of the Philippines. Major formations of stalactites and stalagmites and large chambers are some of the beauty that the cave holds. The lower portion of this subterranean river has big tidal waves coming from the open ocean

The Park is open to the public the whole year round. However the best time to visit is from January to June when the weather is drier making it easier to get around.

Other activities which can be enjoyed in the National Park are jungle trekking, wildlife watching, mangrove paddleboat tour, and swimming/snorkeling in the white sand beaches. For more information, you can check Palawan Underground River’s official website at http://www.puerto-undergroundriver.com. You can contact them at telephone number (+63)(48)434-2509 or email them at info@puerto-undergroundriver.com.

Tip: Cave photography is not an easy task specially while in a boat. Your ideal set up would be a point and shot with a hot shoe, a flash, a wireless trigger to set off your flash off camera, a powerful lamp to help you to focus on your subject and a dry bag that could fit all you gears .

Unless it's a photo trip, don't bring slr because it's bulky and focusing with your camera's live view would not be easy, you have to do it manually with a powerful head lamp to help focus on your subject. Using your on board flash is also your best bet, but orbs from water particles due to humidity will be all over your photo specially when shooting at high iso. You can get rid of those orbs in photoshop but you will loss a lot of details and time doing it. Hope this helps. Happy shooting.

AMANPULO

AMANPULO PALAWAN PHILIPPINES- So near and yet so far! Ordinary mortals like you and me could only dream staying in this place which they described as
A private island, where sea and sky meet as one, where velvet white sand is caressed by the lap of crystal water, where palms bow to vermillion bougainvillea in tropically kissed vegetation, where nature’s hand streaks the sun’s iridescences on its unbridled canvas, where night skies are admired beside the crackle of a ‘tepee’ beach fire, where sleep is submerged in pristine white, where luxury is defined by its earth-given beauty, where peace embraces its island host. This place is Amanpulo, in thePhilippines, a realisation of a dream.

My Lucky friend L is a living testimony that nothing is really impossible in this world! Here is some of her snapshots in AMANPULO...

OH WHAT A LOVELY VIEW OF THE BEACH!! THE PHILIPPINES IS REALLY BLESSED!
Amanpulo rests on the Pamalican Island, about 360 kilometers southwest of Manila. Seven square kilometers of reef surround the island.
She took this photo on board a chartered plane that took them to AMANPULO PALAWAN from MANILA.  Guests fly directly to Pamalican Island in a 19-seat, twin engine turboprop, landing at the resort's private airstrip. Flight time is one hour.
Dry Season usually runs from November to May and the wet season with scattered rain showers from June until October.
Laze around in style
Vermillion bougainvillea

You have a view of the ocean when you eat here.

Special credits to L Thanks for the wonderful pictures and story! If not for your photos and first hand experience I would not be able to come up with this article my dear friend L.

Palawan Pension House

Cheap Pension House in Palawan near the airport.

Whenever I travel, I personally prefer staying in a hostel, inn or pension house rather than staying in a hotel, 'coz I am practically out the whole day exploring places, and all I need is a decent bed and place where I can sleep at night and take a bath in the morning.

Much that I wanted to stay in an expensive hotel my budget won't be enough to pay for a P10,000/ a night accommodation.

So if you are a practical person like me then read on...

I am practical not a cheapskate I don't compromise my safety and health over a few hundred pesos, I still prefer a bed without bed bugs, so please be very careful in choosing a place to stay, you won't want your vacation be ruined by bed bugs or your safety compromised.

PEOPLE WHO MADE A DIFFERENCE

I MET THEM DURING MY RECENT PALAWAN TOUR

Meet Joiriz, my seatmate @ the waiting lounge in NAIA 3, on my way to Palawan, he together with his family adopted me in Puerto Princesa!

I now have an instant family in Puerto Princesa Palawan
Yipee! Everybody is happy during our photoshoot! Ha ha ha!

DO-IT-YOURSELF HONDA BAY TOUR

There are two main ways to go island hopping around HONDA BAY area.
  1. You can go on an organized tour leaving from Puerto Princesa.
  2. Or just do it by yourself.
Just be reminded that the HONDA BAY ST. LOURDES WHARF has a cut off time for island hopping set at 2 o' clock in the afternoon.

Going on a tour will cost you a non-negotiable P 1,100 pesos per person at all travel agencies in Puerto Princesa, Palawan. This will include a pick up service from where you stay, boat rentals, snorkeling gear, lunch and entry fees to 3 islands. Note: I learned that rates for package tours also depend on whatever you want for lunch and the rent for the snorkeling gear. So if you're not picky Php 1,100 it is.

Going on your own will cost you P 1,300 for a boat which can be shared by up to 6 people. The boat can accommodate around 8 pax but their is an additional charge of P 220.00 /pax in excess of 6 persons. The people manning the booth told me you could share the boat with other tourist, yehey that's good news for us traveler's on a shoe string!

Add the cost of transport to and from Puerto Princesa ( ask for the rate from your friendly trike driver). Prices can range from PHP 100-400 depending if you'll ask them to wait for you to finish your island hopping tour.

Sta. Lourdes Wharf is 25 minutes away by hired tricycle or jeepney from downtown PPP. Pumpboat ride from the wharf to the different islands is from 15 to 50 minutes.

If you are two or more the price for doing it by yourself will be somewhat lower than an organized tour. And you will have added flexibility to do what you want - which include going to one or two extra islands for an extra fee.

The bay consists of several islets with shallow reefs bordering fabulous beaches which have become the favorite swimming, snorkeling, and diving destinations of local residents and tourists.

These islets are the following:

  1. Cannon (Cowrie) Island
  2. Bat Island
  3. Lu-li Island (derived from the word "lulubog-lilitaw", meaning floating and sinking island, is visible only during low tide)
  4. Meara Marina
  5. Starfish Island (known for its fine white sand and clear water that teems with starfish)
  6. Snake Island (an island with a long stretch of time white sand shaped like a snake)
  7. Pandan Island
  8. Señorita Island (the breeding site of Lapu-Lapu fish).
Note: Lodging facilities are available for overnight stays in the islands of Meara Marina and Starfish (Sandbar Resort).

The boat rentals at HONDA BAY is very well organized and will not give any problems but trying to find something to eat can be a bigger issue so bring your own baon for lunch and snacks before leaving Puerto Princesa Palawan, if you go on your own.

Since hati kaming dalawa (2) ng friend ko na si Joeriz sa boat P 1,300 divided by 2 = P 650.00 ( sosyal kami nilibre namin tita niya at mga pinsan ha ha ha sila naman nagbaon ng lunch namin pati ng drinks at dala rin namin ang jeep nila kaya may parking fee kaming binayaran na P30.00/ whole day parking na divided by 2 = P15)

TOTAL DO IT YOURSELF HONDA BAY TOUR P 665.00 PER PERSON

Note : Cheaper if madami kayo maghahati!

DO-IT-YOURSELF Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park TOUR

DO-IT-YOURSELF Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park TOUR

FIRST AND FOREMOST WHAT I DID FIRST AFTER OUR HONDA BAY TOUR WAS TO SECURE A PERMIT, A DAY BEFORE MY TRIP TO THE UNDERGROUND RIVER @ THERE BOOKING OFFICE IN DOWNTOWN PUERTO PRINCESA LOCATED AT #11, NATIONAL HIGHWAY, JUNCTION 1, BRGY. SAN MIGUEL, PUERTO PRINCESA CITY.

NOW FOR STARTER, WAKE UP EARLY SO YOU WOULD BE ABLE TO CATCH THE FIRST TRIP BOUND TO SABANG.  "EARLY BIRD CATCHES THE WORM!"

From downtown Puerto Princesa just ride a multicab bound to
New San Jose Terminal LOADING ZONE fare per person- P12.00 ( 10 to 20 minutes depending on the vehicle, if it has so many stop over or not)

D'Christ Jeepney leaves @ 7:00 A.M. From San Jose Terminal
7:00 A.M. is the first trip of the Jeepney from San Jose Terminal to SABANG
THIS IS THE 2ND TRIP BUS OF D'CHRIST BOUND TO SABANG it leaves @ 9A.M. FARE is P 125.00/ person

DAILY SCHEDULE OF JEEPNEY:

7:00 AM - D' Christ Jeepney is the First trip

9:00 AM - D'Christ BUS

12:00 NOON- 3rd trip

3:00 P.M.- Last trip

SCHEDULE COMING BACK FROM SABANG PORT

7:00 AM

9:00 AM

12:00 Noon

3:00 P.M.

Sometimes if there's delay, LAST TRIP is at 4:00 P.M. depending if the jeep is full already. You could also tell the driver that you intend to come back with them like what I did, I asked them what time would they be returning to PPP, they said they were scheduled to leave Sabang @ 12 noon, so I told them to please reserved a seat for me,'coz I have a plane to catch in PPP. They alloted a seat for me in front, giving me a chance to take photographs and the driver served as my tour guide, when we passed by beautiful spots.

You could secure a permit in Sabang for P 150.00 per person, just in case you forgot to get one in downtown Puerto Princesa ( not advisable during peak season for you might be scheduled @ 3 o' clock in the afternoon, in which case you would have to stay overnight in Sabang.)

Choose between hiking for almost 1.5- 3 hours depending on how fast you are @ the Monkey- trail(5.2 km.) or Jungle- trail ( 5.3 km) or hire a boat for P 700 good for 6 people you could share it with other tourist like what I did since I went solo to Sabang. Beware of Monkey who snatches anything in plastic bags, it is better not to bring any food if you choose to do the monkey trail.
