HEALTHY OPTIONS: Now offers Organic Food

HEALTHY OPTIONS: Now offers Organic Food
My aspiration for 2013 is to eat and live healthy. I badly needed to improve my well being and do some lifestyle changes for 2013. I am aware that I need to eat fresh and eat quality food. I should listen more to my body and give it what it needs. Balance.  Super foods. Time with nature. Nourishing my body. Nurturing my soul. Healthy, nutrient dense meals and snacks. Nourishing food. Organic. I should love myself more and know what is good for me. I am eager to find out where I could source organic food. That's why when I got an invitation from Healthy options with the theme: Organika: Celebrating Life in the Farm, I readily agreed.
The night started with cocktails of healthy foods at Shangri-la E-Bar. I got so giddy when I saw Healthy Options very unique centerpiece ideas. Some "wagi" centerpiece they have that night are:
  • organic corn
  • organic Camote
  • organic eggs
While eating we were serenaded with classic music by these musicians. Oh la la! How I wish I could play the Violin! #wish
Afterwards, we were asked to go to the tent outside. Look at all these cool nature-themed decors.
Inside the tent, Healthy Options announced about their organic products. The amazing Amanda Griffin hosted the event.
Yes! Healthy Options announcement is very timely. This is really a very good news to us my fellow Filipinos! Healthy Options, the country’s leading natural products store chain, proudly introduces organic produce and meat farmed locally, in keeping with its mission to provide the most nutritious, best-tasting, and top-quality products to health-conscious Filipinos.
‘Good food grown the good way’ hits Healthy Options stores this 2013 as the leading natural products brand will now offer organic vegetables, herbs, pork, chicken, and eggs sourced from local farmers.
“By launching these products from our very own farm, we renew our commitment to giving our customers better choices for a better life. It is also a show of support to small organic farmers, and to healthy, humane, and sustainable farming,” says Healthy Options managing director Romy Sia.
Nestled at the foot of the scenic Mt. Banahaw and near the two-storey high Majayjay Falls, the five-hectare organic farm is a promising local source of nutritious, flavorful, and top-quality products the store has been known for.

Healthy Options shelves will now carry organic vegetables and herbs that are planted and harvested by hand. Nurtured only by sunlight, pure spring water, and organic compost, this fresh, tasty produce contains optimum nutrients. These gorgeous models walk the runway carrying various organic farm products of Healthy Options.

Healthy Options also showcases livestock-raising in an environment that cultivates their natural behavior and provides a better quality of life. As Mr. Sia proudly claims, “Our animals live in five-star conditions!”

I got excited when I learned that the Healthy Option's free range chickens can run around and forage for food, and are feed with wholesome grains, organic vegetable trimmings, and wild bugs and insects. Meanwhile, the pigs eat an all-natural diet of rice bran, duck weed, copra meal, fruits, and vegetables, and are raised in odor-free pens, with soft beddings made of soil, sawdust and carbonized rice hull. The stress-free environment allows natural instincts like foraging and scratching. How I wish I could visit their farm!
Healthy Options organic pigs live comfortably, in a stress-free environment that lets them exhibit natural instincts like rooting or scratching. They are raised without antibiotics or growth hormones.
Healthy Options organic chickens are allowed to roam free, and are fed on an all-natural diet of wholesome grains, grass, and organic vegetables. Truly, the animals lead a happy and healthy life, and are treated with care and respect. They are then grown to an optimum weight at their own natural pace before they are slaughtered humanely, and are not subjected to any form of mutilation or cruelty. These practices greatly differ from those of industrial farms, which commonly use synthetic fertilizers, pesticides and genetically modified organisms (GMOs) on crops, and steroids, growth hormones, sub-therapeutic doses of antibiotics, and synthetic trace supplements on animals.

Most commercial farms also practice mono-cropping which leads to higher pest attacks, use additives to hasten production, and cram poultry and livestock in very tight, unsanitary spaces that expose them to stress and diseases.
Healthy Options organic eggs are freshly laid every day and are big in size, nutrition and flavor.
Healthy Options organic vegetables and herbs are naturally grown, freshly hand-picked, and are free from chemical fertilizers or pesticides.

Aside from offering superior meat and vegetable produce, Healthy Options is also proud to advocate farming that does not produce excessive waste or pollution, and results in a healthier ecosystem.

“We will deliver products that have the Healthy Options guarantee of freshness and quality, just as we have been doing for more than a decade,” promises Mr. Sia.
Let's eat healthy!

Green Leafy Vegetables

A pleasant Good morning to everyone~!

I took this photo when we were in Baguio City Public Market. Kids today don't like to eat vegetables. And that is a no no!

While your kids are still young, train them to eat Green Leafy Vegetables. It is not only healthy but also very nutritious too!

Greens are a neglected gold mine. Filipinos today are trained to eat at fast food restaurants as early as two years old or maybe even younger. While I was growing up,  everybody is telling me that green leafy vegetables have a good effect on one's health. Then why do Filipinos today rarely eat green leafy vegetables?

Why are cabbage, broccoli, turnip greens, and spinach are rarely seen at the Filipino's dinner table?

Why is lettuce the only green vegetable that most Filipinos ever use. Yeah, they use it on their salads or as toppings on their burgers with thousand island dressings and mayonnaise.

Green vegetables are recognized by nutritionists as one of the most inexpensive sources of so many important nutrients. And yet, we take those green leafy vegetables for granted.

Kumain ng gulay dahil eto ay pampahaba ng buhay! (Eat vegetables for they prolong life!) Enjoy! Have a happy day!

Is Glaucoma already ruining your sight?

Is your eyesight slowly blurring? It may be a sign of the dreaded disease called glaucoma. As the darkness of glaucoma ruins the quality of life for you and your family, it’s most dire effects can be temporarily circumvented with proper knowledge of what it is.

Glaucoma is an incurable eye disease that gradually steals vision. This means that as your days pass, blindness slowly take over a person’s life. Save what was left of your eyesight. Have yourself or your love ones check before its too late.

Glaucoma damages the optic nerve, which is the cable that connects the eye to the brain. Damage to this very crucial nerve is permanent and causes shrinking of the visual field, leading to blindness.
In the Philippines, glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible blindness. As an advocacy against glaucoma, the Philippine Glaucoma Society is aggressively promoting awareness of the disease in the country in partnership with Allergan.

How exactly can you know that you have glaucoma already? You can’t. Only your doctor can pinpoint exactly if it truly is glaucoma that is ruining your eyesight as symptoms of the disease may not be apparent in the early stages.

Although mostly asymptomatic early on, a small percentage of cases of glaucoma have episodes of eye and head pain, blurred vision, redness, headache, vomiting and seeing rainbows around lights.
Patients who have high eye pressure, family history of glaucoma, are aged over 45 years old, previous eye injury, chronic steroid use, diabetes mellitus, or Asian descent have a higher risk of getting glaucoma.

High eye pressure

The normal range of eye pressure is 10-21 millimeters of mercury.  Your doctor measures your eye pressure using a special instrument called a tonometer.
Eye pressure alone does not cause glaucoma; however, it is the most significant risk factor for the disease. If diagnosed with high eye pressure, it is smart to frequently get comprehensive eye examinations to check for signs of glaucoma. It is only the only risk factor that can be modified with treatment.

Diabetes mellitus

Patients with diabetes are also at high risk of getting the incurable eye disease. This is by virtue of the two diseases occurring in a similar age group (>50 years). There is also a certain type of glaucoma resulting from diabetic complications in the retina. This usually occurs in long-standing uncontrolled diabetes.

Family History

Open-angle glaucoma, one of the most common types of glaucoma, is hereditary. If you have immediate family members with glaucoma, you are more susceptible to the disease compared to those without it.

Steroids

There are many studies that show the relationship between the chronic use of steroids and glaucoma. Long-term steroid use may cause elevation of the eye pressure and cause glaucomatous damage to the optic nerve. Common indications for steroids are asthma, arthritis, severe allergies, eczematous skin conditions. If you are being given steroids for more than 1 month ask to be referred to an eye doctor for measurement of eye pressure.

Eye injury

A previous eye injury also makes a patient susceptible to glaucoma. Injuries that penetrate the eye may damage the drainage channels of the eye causing high eye pressure. Common causes of these are sports-related injuries.
There is no cure yet for glaucoma. The only thing that you and your doctor can do is slow down the damage that glaucoma causes on not only your vision but also your life.
Remember, for glaucoma, early detection is the only solution. Visit your doctor and find out if glaucoma is already ruining your sight.

When muscles are sore and bones are tired, even the smallest steps and the simplest tasks become particularly difficult to endure. Joint pains, stiffness, injuries and other chronic conditions like arthritis and scoliosis make it hard to go about the day like nothing is wrong, and the pain is so personal that no one else understands why.
At NY Theraspine Clinic, they completely understand these problems. With its team of friendly, highly-qualified, even award-winning chiropractors and physical therapists accredited abroad, NY Theraspine offers only personalized the best treatments for the most common neck and back pains, to posture problems, and for stroke rehabilitation.

Adds Life To Years And Years To Life
"Don't resort to quick fixes and go to the nearest neighborhood spa, entrusting your bodies to your favorite masseuse. It is dangerous to have your bones and back be touched by just anybody. You need professionals to do that." quips Michelle Natividad, New York (NY) Theraspine Clinic owner and registered Physical Therapist.
Chiropractic corrects the cause rather than treats symptoms.

NY Theraspine Clinic employs the methods of Chiropractic -a form of alternative medical treatment that focuses on manual therapy and manipulation of the spine, joints, and soft tissues. When done correctly, chiropractic not only treats existing conditions, but can also prevent potential injuries and illnesses from happening, also preventing surgeries.
For those who suffer from disabling conditions like low back pain, arthritis, fractures, carpal tunnel syndrome or sciatica regardless of age and fitness level, the NY Theraspine Clinic also offers Physical Therapy Rehabilitation, which involves the use of heat treatment, ultrasound, electric stimulation, therapeutic exercise, and therapeutic massage with the aim of restoring each patient’s maximum functional independence.

For those who lead active lifestyles and are into sports and intense physical activities, the clinic also offers Sports Physical Therapy and Conditioning which ultimately aims to rehabilitate muscles and treat injuries of both professional and amateur athletes as soon as possible, so that they may continue playing their sport without having to take a long break for treatment.

NY Theraspine also makes use of the Myofascial Release approach, which caters to those who are plagued by headaches, pain, and restricted motion as a result of the tightening of the fascia. This often happens to people who have suffered from trauma — a fall, whiplash, or side-effects from a surgery.

With the Myofascial Release approach, therapists individualize each session to cater to each patient’s specific needs, using a number of Myofascial Release techniques and movement therapy to help restore the patient’s range of motion, alleviate pain, and eventually help them return to living an active, free life.
NY Theraspine Clinic’s services also include weight management and fitness and
conditioning, showing just how dedicated the clinic is to promoting a healthy, happy lifestyle.

Take the first step towards a pain-free world. Call 375-1035/921-9831. You can visit them at 73-G Sct. Dr. Lazacano cor. Sct. Tuazon, Brgy. Symptoms and signs of heart attack

My Mama and Papa died of heart attack. Heart Attack is the leading cause of death and disability for both men and women not only in the Philippines but globally. Heart disease isn't contagious. You can't catch it like you can the flu or a cold. Instead, certain things increase a person's chances of getting cardiovascular disease. Doctors call these things risk factors.

Some of these risk factors a person can't do anything about, like being older and having other people in the family who have had the same problems. But people do have control over some risk factors like:
  •  smoking
  •  having high blood pressure
  •  being overweight
  •  and not exercising can increase the risk of getting cardiovascular disease.
.
Symptoms and signs of heart attack may include the following:
  • Chest pain or discomfort that is crushing, like a heavy weight; or squeezing, like a tight band around the chest; or an ache in the centre of the chest. The pain may radiate to the neck, jaw, shoulders, arms (especially the left arm), back, abdomen, face or teeth. The pain is persistent (longer than 15 minutes), and does not ease with rest. The pain is sometimes mistaken for indigestion. Note that in some cases, heart attacks are painless.
  • Profuse sweating
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Feeling dizzy or light-headed
  • Nausea
  • Pale, clammy skin
  • The pulse may be fast or irregular.
  • The person may suddenly collapse and lose consciousness
First aid for heart attack:

  • Encourage the person to sit still, with knees bent to ease strain on the heart.
  • Talk to him calmly and reassuringly, and loosen any tight clothing.
  • Monitor any changes in condition.
  • The person should take one aspirin with water (Unless he is allergic to or unable to take aspirin). Aspirin helps to prevent blood clotting

UMBILICAL CORD BLOOD BANKING CAN SAVE LIVES

Attention: Expectant Parents

Cord blood banking is probably one of the most important long-term investments for your family's health. While it is crucial that your child's stem cells are processed and stored with the best methods possible, it is even more vital that you need a cord blood bank that would be with you for years to come, regardless of how uncertain times may be.

During pregnancy, the umbilical cord functions as a lifeline between mother and child. Years later, the blood present within the umbilical cord could offer hope for the child or other individuals in the family.
The umbilical cord blood is a rich source of haematopoietic stem cells (HSCs); cells responsible for replenishing blood and regenerating the immune system. HSCs are known as 'precursor cells', as they have the unique ability to differentiate into the different types of cells found in the body, namely:
  • Red Blood Cells - which transport oxygen
  • White Blood Cells - which produce antibodies and fight bacteria
  • Platelets - which assist blood clotting
Since 1988, UCB stem cells have been used to treat an increasing number of diseases. Today, this numbers more than 80, including blood and metabolic disorders, immunodeficiency ailments and autoimmune diseases. For a full list of treatable diseases, click here.
When transplanted into a patient, the haematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) migrate to the bone marrow and produce new blood cells, boosting the immune system. With the rapid advances in technology, the number of diseases treated by stem cell therapies is expected to increase.
Advantages of storing UCB stem cells are:
  • A guaranteed match for autologous transplants (where the donor and recipient are the same individual)
  • A readily available supply of stored HSCs. This compares well to having to do a national or international search which is costly and time-consuming in an already time critical situation.
  • Lower risk of Graft vs. Host Disease for autologous transplants, a situation where the transplanted tissue attacks the patients own tissue.
  • Ease of collection, which is pain-free and risk-free to both mother and child.
  • UCB stem cells are more vigorous, have a higher rate of engraftment and are more tolerant to tissue mismatches, compared to other types of stem cells, e.g. bone marrow.
The main intention for a stem cell transplant is the need to reconstitute a patient's blood and immune system, following treatments such as chemotherapy or radiotherapy, which destroys the blood cells. The HSCs are infused directly into the patient's blood stream, and subsequently migrate to the bone marrow.
Within the bone marrow environment, the HSCs are able to begin their differentiation into the three types of blood cells, thereby initiating the regeneration of the patient's blood and immune system.
The first umbilical cord blood transplant was performed in 1988 and resulted in the successful treatment of a 5-year old boy diagnosed with Fanconi Anaemia. To date there have been more than 14000 umbilical cord blood stem cell transplants reported worldwide.

Banking cord blood does not guarantee that the cells will provide a cure or be applicable in every situation. Use will be ultimately determined by the treating physician.
Last update 4th Aug 2011.

Studies have shown that cord blood stem cells can also be used for siblings and other members of your family who have a matching tissue type. Siblings have up to a 75% chance of compatibility, and the cord blood may even be a match for parents (50%) and grandparents.
Cord blood stem cells are currently used in the treatment of several life-threatening diseases, and play an important role in the treatment of blood and immune system related genetic diseases, cancers, and blood disorders
Saving our first-born's cord blood stem cells was a no-brainer for my husband and me. As new parents we want to be able to provide the best options we can for Noah; we'd also like to try and start preparing for his future. Cord blood banking does both for us. We don't know if or when we'll be needing the stored cord blood stem cells, but it gives us a sense of security and peace that, should we ever need it, the best solutions are available to us.

We chose CordLife for 2 reasons – their service quality and the fact that they have a facility in Manila. It just made a lot more sense to us and we're so happy we did it!

Type 1 diabetes

A clinical trial underway at the University of Florida is examining how an infusion of autologous cord blood stem cells into children with Type 1 diabetes will impact metabolic control over time, as compared to standard insulin treatments. Preliminary results demonstrate that an infusion of cord blood stem cells is safe and may provide some slowing of the loss of insulin production in children with type 1 diabetes
Cord blood banking was a completely new concept to me when I had my first child, but I had read up on it due to the fact that my mom was diagnosed with stage 3b cancer the year prior to my pregnancy – and I wanted to do my tiny part in perhaps saving a family member’s life down the line. With percentages high on potentially saving lives within my family – I knew that I wanted to do this for those I love more than life itself.

Singapore Storage Facility
Singapore is an ideal long-term storage place for your baby's cord blood unit because of its natural disaster-free location, political and socio-economic stability. Located in Singapore Science Park II, our cord blood processing laboratory is housed in the most prestigious research and development (R&D) and technology hub in the country.
Our AABB accredited facility is well equipped with 24/7 backup systems, which are further enhanced with remote alarm to alert our staff via phone if anything is amiss. Our equipment, critical materials and services also undergo stringent testing and certification regularly.
Your baby's cord blood will be stored in fire retardant and vacuum insulated double hull nitrogen tanks which can remain at optimal temperature for more than two weeks without replenishing liquid nitrogen.
As Singapore is geographically small and free from natural disasters, there is no real need to store your baby's cord blood in different locations. This unnecessary location transfer will only heighten the risks of exposing your baby's cord blood to heat, resulting in cellular damage and sample mix-up. It is CordLife's lifelong commitment to safeguard your baby's cord blood unit under the best storage conditions in the most secure and safest location in Singapore.
