Pearl River Café: Authentic Cantonese Cuisine At TriNoma Mall

Pearl River Café: Authentic Cantonese Cuisine At TriNoma Mall
Pearl River Café Trinoma, BBQ Pork Rice

I used to go with my aunt to Hong Kong to taste different Cantonese cuisine, among others. Imagine the exuberant cost of our trip from plane tickets to bus fare, hotel expenses, the silly travel tax, etc. Oh, the never ending list of expenses goes on and on when you travel abroad. Well, I can now say to you, my dear, that you don't need to worry anymore!  Yes, fellow foodie, you no longer need to fly to Hong Kong or Macau to get your Cantonese food fix. Yehey!

 Pearl River Café Trinoma facade

You can now eat to your hearts content at Pearl River Café, a Cantonese restaurant smack right at the garden area of TriNoma Mall.  It's just beside Cyma restaurant which offers Greek dishes. This authentic Cantonese Restaurant caters to your Chinese food cravings.

Pearl River Café Trinoma, lights, tables and chairs

Upon entering you'll notice that the place has a mirror on the wall that gives a sense of greater space by reflecting light, thus brightening the room. The reflection of the room also fools the eye (trompe l'oeil) into feeling there is a greater amount of space than in reality.  I think its maximum capacity is at least 30 persons. The tables and chairs have the right height and firmness.

My love for Chinese food has brought me to Binondo and to as far as Hong Kong and mainland China. I literally flew from Manila to Beijing and to Hangzhou then to Shanghai in my search for authentic delicious Chinese cuisine.  Unlike the traditional Chinese restaurant  that I visited in the past, there is no dim sum trolley at Pearl River Café, you have to order dim sum from the menu.
Pearl River Café Trinoma Hakaw, hakao, Dimsum, DIM SUM, Chinese, Food
Hakao (pronounced as ha-kaw) or steamed shrimp dumpling (Php99.00) is one of my gauge to know the authenticity of the food that a Chinese restaurant offers. I tend to judge Chinese restaurants by how good their hakao is.  And I can say that Pearl River Café passed the test with flying colors. The steamed shrimp dumplings don't just look adorable, they also taste wonderful. The Steamed Shrimp Dumplings were fresh, flavorful and perfectly prepared using the delicate dumpling skins that turn translucent when done. The dumplings were full of real shrimp fillings! I am happy to note that they were not stuffed with the usual extenders.
Pearl River Café Trinoma, Chinese Food, Beef Brocolli,

Beef and Broccoli (Php229) were very delicious.
The Chinese broccoli was really fresh and crispy.  It blended well with the tender beef cuts.
Pearl River Café Trinoma, Chinese Food, Steamed Spareribs and Taro with Black Bean

Steamed Spareribs and Taro with Black Bean (Php129.00). I took only one bite of this dish and I think it has lot of fats. I think this dish is a bit overprice.  You could order one at one fourth of its price elsewhere.  Please make this a healthy meat meal by using lean meat.

Pearl River Café Trinoma, Chinese Food, Vegetable, Barbecue Pork, Pork with rice

Barbecue pork with plain rice Php129.00

BBQ Pork (Cha Siu, or Cha Shao 叉燒) “Cha Siu” literally means "fork burn/roast." It has a lovely color of red and has a sweet fragrance. Traditionally, Cantonese use pork butt when roasting BBQ pork. Pork butt contains a lot of fat that results in moist, succulent meat after many hours of slow cooking with low heat.

The chefs who roast Cha Siu for Chinese restaurants would use a very huge oven. They skewer all seasoned boneless pork strips with long forks and place them in huge covered ovens so that all pork strips can be baked evenly and easily brushed with honey. I was a bit disappointed because Pearl River Café's version has more fat than lean meat.  I hope they do something about it.

Pearl River Café Trinoma, Chinese Food, Taiwan Jin Xuan Buttermilk Oolong Tea
I capped the Cantonese feast with a cup of a healthy and delicious Taiwan Jin Xuan Buttermilk Oolong Tea ( Php350.00 )Taiwan Jin Xuan Buttermilk Oolong Tea produces a light yellowish/ golden liquid with milky sweet aroma and smooth and sweet lingering taste. It is produced from tea leaves at certain time, temperature, altitude, and soil conditions to get the milky silky texture.
Taiwan Jin Xuan Buttermilk Oolong Tea, Pearl River Café Trinoma, Chinese Food, Yummy, Delicious, Mint

It was my first time to try this kind of tea. I so love the experience.  Jin-Xuan milk oolong tea is usually planted at an elevation of 1,000 feet above sea level.  When Jin-Xuan tea leaves are lightly roasted during processing, they have a unique milk flavor which is called nai xiang or milk oolong.  It smells buttery and sweet--candy sweet, not grassy-sweet--and brews to a lovely light golden color.  It has a pleasing, smooth flavor with a buttery aftertaste. There is a slight astringency apparent when first sipped, which mellows into a very nice, full sensation on the back of the tongue.  My rating for this tea: Excellent.

Pearl River Café's Dim Sum menu is extensive and allows diners to check off those small plate dishes (and quantity) he/she desires.
The dishes were all served freshly prepared, steaming hot and incredibly flavorful. The best thing about ordering dim sum is that each plate averages in cost from Php99 to Php199.  This will allow you the freedom to try many things without the worry of getting stuck with an entrée that you don’t like. Order and then sit back and let your taste buds take you away to another world.

This review is made possible by Open rice.  Thank you for the invitation Stephanie.

Sharp’s air conditioning technologies make cool air safe and clean

Sharp’s air conditioning technologies make cool air safe and clean

Good news to those people who often get allergies when they are in an air-conditioned environment.  Finally there is no need for you to undergo the same ordeal again. You can now upgrade your air-conditioning unit to a model that not only cools the air but also gets rid of harmful bacteria.

A lot of airborne—and potentially dangerous—viruses, allergens, and bacteria are present in our environment today, making necessary protection from the health risks they bring, especially to our kids.

Today, Sharp (Phils.) Corporation has air conditioners bring not only cool but also clean air to homes, offices, and any type of establishment on any given day and weather. Its impressive line of air conditioning products offers enhanced and “healthier” cooling efficiency compared to other brands in the market today.

What sets Sharp air conditioners apart from other brands today is the air purification system called Plasmacluster Ion (PCI) technology, a technologically advanced airflow filtration system that helps free the air from dangerous airborne threats. This helps produce cleaner and fresher air that’s 99 percent free from airborne threats – clean and safe air, inspired by nature, indeed.

The PCI technology involves the generation of an electrical discharge that helps make and releases positive and negative ions into the air. These positively and negatively charged ions, similar to the ones found in nature, go after airborne bacteria and viruses, attach themselves to them to form highly oxidizing radicals, then finally draw out hydrogen, effectively breaking down the protein’s membrane to make them inactive. These hydrogen and oxygen radicals then combine with hydrogen and return to the atmosphere as water.

Dust, pollen, and other forms of air contaminants are also some of Sharp air conditioners’ targets. The charged ions neutralize static electricity to help prevent these contaminants—even odors—from sticking to walls and fabrics for easy collection and filtering. Because PCI technology mimics how nature cleanses the air around, it allows us to breathe fresh and clean air that is safe and chemical-free. This makes PCI air conditioning units ahead of others in the market.

A lot of people, especially in enclosed, air-conditioned rooms, will be happy to note that Sharp air conditioners are effective in protecting the home and the family, the workplace, and other establishments like airports, museums, and other public places, from unhealthy air.

Besides PCI technology, Sharp air conditioners are also equipped with Powerful Jet Stream Technology which makes everyone in the room feel cool, regardless of where they are located.

The Powerful Jet Stream Technology has a strong and direct airflow that instantly cools the body and the room 30 percent faster than the conventional split-type air conditioners. The Coanda Technology, on the other hand, throws cool air through a soft, indirect airflow from far distances to provide soothing coolness to the room, which works best for babies and sometimes the elderly. Finally, the Inverter Technology enables faster and quicker cooling, reduces start-up time, and promises effective energy operation by avoiding the cycling of compressor. The process also helps you avoid power surges, thereby saving you energy and more money.

All these technologies designed to make the customer’s life more comfortable are available in each Sharp Deluxe Split-Type Air Conditioner, as part of the company’s “Our Brand, Our Pride” philosophy; this is a commitment to uplift the quality of life of Filipinos by providing them with exceptional home appliance products – no frills, no fuss, just simple engineering marvels for you and your family.

Caffe Bene:The Art of Cupping Coffee

Caffe Bene:The Art of Cupping Coffee
Caffe Bene is pronounced as Ca-fe Be-ne, as in benevolent.  The word "Bene" in the brand name comes from the Italian word for "good."  So Caffe Bene means good coffee!  It was founded by Kim Sun-Kwon, chairman and CEO.  Caffé Bene was established in April 2008 and it now has more than 900 stores all over Korea (beating the giant Starbucks). It became a Korean sensation due to its key product of excellent medium roast coffee and its signature freshly made Liege waffles which is richer, denser, sweeter and chewier than traditional waffles.

The famous "The First Shop" of the Korean movie "Coffee Prince" was shot in Caffe Bene.  For Korean drama addicts, you have probably recognized it also as the coffee shop of that infamous coffee “Crème Kiss” from the hit Secret Garden. Yes, that superkilig romantic act of Hyun Bin kissing the cappuccino foam off Ha Ji Won’s lip was also shot inside a Caffe Bene shop. Caffe Bene has Korean pretty boy "Prince of Asia" Jang Keun Suk as its poster boy.

I was so impressed the first time I walked at Caffe Bene. It is absolutely gorgeous all over, a super nice spot to go and chill with friends! It has a good atmosphere, cozy decors and small intimate setting. The giant clock decor, chairs and bookshelves are a nice touch. You can say that Caffe Bene is nice, charming and understated. Hmmmm....kind of wood-y and well laid-out too. It has a cozy feel with its wood floors and wood tables. I absolutely love how the walls are filled with bookshelves with random books and cute ornaments!

Caffe Bene invited me for its triangulation challenge.  I arrived early at its Eastwood Citywalk 2 branch on the day of the triangulation challenge. There was a little confusion though when I asked for directions because the people in the area told me that Caffe Bene had closed already.  The place maybe is under renovation but inside has a homey European ambiance that is accentuated by Korean touches.  It exudes warmth and cozy vibe.

The owner of Caffe Bene Philippines, Mr. Desmond Chua, hosted the event together with a European accredited coffee expert. They explained to us everything there is to know about coffee and Caffe Bene’s coffee.

Mr. Chua also taught us how to do the art of cupping. Cupping is the specialty coffee industry’s standard for coffee evaluation. It is a method where individual cups of coffee are prepared according to established guidelines for the purpose of assessing the aroma, taste, texture of a sample coffee.

Hot water was poured into three different cups with ground coffee. After four minutes, the grounds have risen on top of the glass and you have to “break” the coffee with a spoon and then remove those grounds until there’s nothing left. After that, you can now taste the coffee.

At the Triangulation Challenge, we tried ten sets of a 3-coffee cup combinations and wrote on a piece of paper which among the three was Caffe Bene Blend. It was fun and exciting at the same time. I was on my fourth set when all the coffee began tasting the same. I think my tongue became numb with the taste of coffee. I had to drink water to neutralize my tongue. Fortunately, I got 6 out of 10. Not bad for a first timer.

According to Mr. Chua, Caffé Bene’s secret in getting the most flavor out of its coffee is how it roasts the coffee grounds.  All of its coffees are Medium Roast and that’s what makes it different from most coffee shops. Unlike the strong bitter taste of dark roast coffee, medium roast coffee is not bitter and you’ll need less additives like sugar. That’s the “Bene Difference“.

Caffe Bene's staff also served Liège Waffle, which is made only when you order it to ensure that customers get the exact same fresh waffles as served in the city of Liège, Belgium.  It is crunchy, soft and chewy. Its sweetness is just right. I love waffles!

I would like to try Caffe Bene's Bingsu (a Korean iced parfait similar to our halo-halo)
and Frappes and its other food offerings so I’ll definitely be back.

Caffe Bene Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/caffebeneph

I have tasted the Bene Difference!  It is now your turn to try it for yourself. Korean novela fanatics and coffee-lovers should come and visit Caffe Bene at any of its branches. Its Eastwood Citywalk 2 branch store hours is from 7am to 1am Mon-Th, then from 7am to 3:30am during Fri-Sat and from 10am to1am on Sundays. Free wifi access is available.

SAMSUNG NOTE 4: Metallic-framed Phablet

SAMSUNG NOTE 4: Metallic framed-Phablet
The new Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is plastic no more. I think that is a big improvement from its plastic phone predecessors.

Four Samsung Galaxy Note 4 colours will be available:
  • black
  • white
  • gold
  • and pink.
The new Note 4 allegedly has a quad HD Super AMOLED display. That would be stunning. Now, you could expect a phone with more vibrant colors. The new Samsung Note 4 is said to have an exceptionally wide viewing angles, and no visible pixels. The Note 4 has 2560 x 1440 pixel resolution. I am so excited to have this phone really soon. .

LUNA J FILIPINO GASTROPUB: Sir Chief's Newest Delicious Venture

LUNA J FILIPINO GASTROPUB: Sir Chief's Newest Delicious Venture
Have you seen Sir Chief already in person? If not then try to eat at his latest restaurant along Tomas Morato called Luna J.  Upon arrival at the area, you would see this big very inviting signage.
Spoliarium painter and national hero Juan Luna is the inspiration behind Luna J Filipino Gastropub's name. Luna J Filipino Gastropub is not about complex presentations or trendy food but simple, made-from-scratch preparations of Filipino dishes scoured from all over the archipelago.
It is located at Il Terrazzo building in Quezon City, just a few steps away from Wang Fu Chinese Bistro owned and operated by Richard Yap, a.k.a. Sir Chief of "Be careful with my heart" fame, together with his business partners/ friends Ace Wang and  Lester Pimentel Ong ( who happened to be my cousin). Our family is very proud of Lester because he is not only a Wushu World Champion and movie and TV fight director but he is also a very kind person, doting father, loyal husband and a very good businessman, all rolled into one.
It can seat down comfortably 24 persons inside its air-conditioned dining area. They have both indoor and outdoor dining areas. Ambiance is great!
I highly recommend the adobong manok of Luna J. The chicken meat is so tender, sweet and very tasty. I simply love it.  Superrr sarapp!
Bagnet with KBL - ( Kamatis, Bagoong, Lasona or in English Tomatoes, Fish Sauce & Onion Relish) is another of its bestseller. I think this dish is from Ilocos. Because when I went to Ilocos several years ago, the family of my friend's husband made sure we had this Ilocano meal everyday that I became addicted to it. Seeing and eating this dish at Luna J has brought back so much memories of my summer vacation in Ilocos. Eating it immediately sent me to pork heaven. Ha ha ha!
Kalderetang Baka  is one of the classic Filipino dishes served by many household during special occasions like birthdays and fiesta. Luna J's version is more like that of a beef mechado because it has a lot of tomato sauce.  Bakareta or Kalderetang Baka in Bicol is spicier.  But it tastes just as great and the meat is just as tender.  A must try!
Gising Gising is refreshingly delicious. This dish is unknown to me until Freda Co recommended this dish to us. Gising Gising,  it turned out, is a traditional Filipino dish blending minced meat with sigarilyas (winged beans), chilis and coconut sauce.   I think this dish is a distant cousin of laing. Ha ha ha!  It hit the high notes with the chili and from the sweet and fresh taste of its gata (coconut milk).  Oh, how I love its sweet and spicy taste!
Laing.  I am from Bicol and I could attest that Luna J's version is excellent. The "gata" used is kakang gata. It is sweet, fresh and very delicious. The laing has a rich savory flavor and a tingle of chile warmth on the finish.  It's really a must try.
Tinapa Rice is a yummy Filipino fried rice dish made up of tinapa (smoked fish) flakes, cooked rice and seasoning topped with tomato and salted eggs.

Luna J's thirst quenchers Pandan juice and lemongrass juice.
Lemongrass is named as such but has no connection with lemons except that it has a strong lemon-like aroma and taste.

I am telling you do not let this humble grass deceive you. It is packed with so much goodness that it can help improve so many chronic conditions. Nutrition-wise, it is a good source of vitamins A and C, folate, magnesium, zinc, copper, iron, potassium, phosphorus, calcium and manganese plus it has minute traces of the B vitamins.

The health benefits of lemongrass is tremendous due to its superior anti-microbial, anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-cancer properties.
For dessert, you could not go wrong with the traditional Filipino dessert palitaw (Sticky rice dumplings with coconut and toasted sesame seeds). In Filipino, litaw (lee-tou) means to rise. To emerge. To appear. To be seen again. Palitaw (pah-lee-tou) is a sweet rice dumpling sprinkled with a generous amount of grated coconut, sugar sesame seeds and cheese. The cheese added a new twist. Intrigued, I  picked up one piece of palitaw with my fork and took a bite. I was immediately transported to dessert heaven because of its soft, chewy dumplings that has a delightful texture of coconut and the rich nutty flavor of toasted sesame seeds with a cheesy twist. I licked my fingers clean of the sugary grit and reached out for another. Truly one-of-a-kind. Truly tastes like home.
Buko pandan was invented by Aling Amor, a good friend and ex-officemate of my good friend Eva. I know how to make this dessert since I was young because Eva thought me how to do it long before it became a household nameAnd Luna J's version did not disappoint.

Luna J's staff are friendly and service is good and fast. I believe that's the normal day-to-day dining scenarios at Luna J.

We were really stuffed when we finished our meal. Luna J Filipino Gastropub is now included in my all-time favorite restaurant.

You might want to visit them for a good bonding with your friends and family. Its entrees ranges from over PHp 65 to PHp 325 on the average, the prices are so affordable. Its food portions are generous.

If you’re into drinking alcohol, its menu is perfectly set up as pulutan (appetizer taken with alcohol).  Luna J also serves zero degrees beer for only Php50.

Please forgive the low quality of my photos I lost my Canon DSLR and Lumix camera at the steel PAID parking of CASH AND CARRY in Makati. #GanitoKamiSaMakati #BulokNaParkingSaMakati #AngTutuoSaMakati #CashNCarryPugadNgSalisiGang

ABS-CBN PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA: Releases Decades of OPM Album

ABS-CBN PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA: Releases Decades of OPM Album

They say music heals.

Tama?

In that connection, I'd like to call the attention of those people with broken hearts. Please listen to the ABS-CBN Philharmonic Orchestra's album. It can do wonders to your well-being.

Several years ago, I wrote about the schedule of free public performances by the Philharmonic Orchestra. Boy, was I grateful when a mom reader told me that because of that free concert her son decided to take musical instrument lessons. That encounter made me #happy and sad at the same time. Weird eh? Yes, I wrote about their performances schedule but I was not able to watch the Philharmonic Orchestra's live performances at that time. Sigh, I thought I lost my chance forever.

Then the other night, after two long years,  I finally heard with my ears and saw with my own two-eyes the amazing 42-piece orchestra headed by musical director and conductor Gerard Salonga in a wonderful night of music at Dolphy theatre at ABS-CBN compound.  It was the official presscon for the orchestra's debut album: #DecadesofOPM!

I was blown away by their OPM performances. My heart was filled with joy. It was fun. The ABS-CBN Philharmonic Orchestra even had a live interaction with some of the press in attendance that night. @ABSPhilharmonic's gamely played "Whoops Kiri" under the baton of Ms. Crispina Belen, Entertainment Editor of @manila_bulletin. Good job ma'am.

Our very lucky media friends @TempoPHL's Nestor Cuartero & @PEPalerts' Allan Sancon had an opportunity to sing #MagingSinoKaMan accompanied by ABS-CBN Philharmonic Orchestra.  Bongga! How I wish I could also sing na ang nag-aacompany ay ang ABS-CBN Philharmonic Orchestra! Weeeeeeeeee!

It was a fun night. Thank you to the Lopez family for making the ABS-CBN Philharmonic Orchestra a reality. I hope Mr. Jonathan and @StarRecordsPH will produce a Christmas album for the orchestra too.

Let us support our very own all Filipino musicians at the
ABS-CBN Philharmonic Orchestra, peeps.

Congrats @gerardsalonga
You can buy a copy of their album at all major record stores for only P350. A very nice Christmas gift for your loved ones.

Welcome
