Shell FuelSave Celebrity Driver of the Year Bianca Gonzalez is back to defend her crown in the Shell FuelSave Fact or Fiction Driving Challenge

MANILA, FEBRUARY 2015 – “Being a fuel efficient driver is easy. I’m not an expert, just an ordinary, everyday driver, but through the Shell FuelSave driving challenges, I learned that making a few simple changes to my driving habits and choosing the right fuel make a difference in making your fuel last longer,” said celebrity host and published author Bianca Gonzalez who, after completing several driving challenges last year, is fast-becoming a veteran when it comes to fuel efficiency.

Gonzalez first took on the call of Pilipinas Shell to be a fuel efficient motorist during the Shell FuelSave Celebrity Driving Challenge in January 2014 where she drove from Batangas and through the busy streets of Manila to learn about fuel efficiency from some university students who represented the country in the first ever Shell Eco-marathon Asia to be held in the Philippines. Gonzalez was crowned Shell FuelSave Celebrity Driver of the Year, besting celebrities from Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand, at the final leg of the Celebrity Driving Challenge held on the opening day of Shell Eco-marathon 2014.

Gonzalez went behind the wheel again in October to challenge everyday Filipino motorists including moms, professional drivers, and media representatives for the Shell FuelSave Good Choice Driving Challenge. The Driving Challenge tested their skills in making good choices on the road to help make their fuel last longer where Gonzalez walked away with a First Runner-up title under her belt.

It seems that nothing could stop Gonzalez in defending her crown as she teams up once again with Pilipinas Shell to take on a different kind of challenge – discovering the extraordinary lengths Filipino motorists go through to save on fuel, and putting them to the test. With Shell Eco-marathon 2015 coming up, Gonzalez enlisted the help of five students from universities forming the Philippine contingent to SEMA 2015 to join her team for the Shell FuelSave Fact or Fiction Driving Challenge on February 11.

Driving the recently-launched models of the All New Honda Jazz, All New Honda City, and All New Honda Brio Amaze, Gonzalez and the students will go head to head against select media personalities on a road trip to Clark, Pampanga. In this Driving Challenge, the participants will go through pit stops that will reveal interesting habits Filipino motorists practice to help them save fuel. The teams will have to distinguish between fuel efficiency fact and fiction to manage their fuel consumption, coupled with teamwork and determination, to outwit each other.

The Shell FuelSave Fact or Fiction Driving Challenge is the lead up to Shell Eco-marathon Asia 2015 as Shell brings back its largest fuel efficiency educational platform to Manila from February 26 to March 1. This will be the second year that Shell Eco-marathon Asia will be held in the country, and Filipino student teams from the country’s top universities will compete once again against fellow students from countries around Asia and the Middle East to design, build and drive the most energy efficient vehicles of tomorrow.

The Philippine teams made history last year when the De La Salle University’s (DLSU) Eco-Car Team-Electric ranked second place in the UrbanConcept-Battery Electric Category with a consumption of 66.38 km/kWH, while the Technological Institute of the Philippines (TIP) also came in as a top contender when TIP Mileage bested over twelve other teams in the UrbanConcept-Diesel Category by finishing third with a fuel consumption of 47.44 km/L.
As these students bring pride to the country once more, the Shell FuelSave Fact or Fiction Driving Challenge will serve as a platform to present them to the Filipino public.

The winner of the Shell FuelSave Fact or Fiction Driving Challenge will be determined during the culminating program on February 11. At the same time, Shell will also reveal highlights of the Shell FuelSave Fact or Fiction Report, a nationwide study conducted in December 2014 that analyses the behavior of 1,000 Filipino motorists aged 18 to 40 to understand the extraordinary lengths drivers are willing to go in order to save fuel and cut their driving costs
“More than just being any driving competition, the Shell FuelSave Fact or Fiction Driving Challenge is our way of educating Filipino motorists how to become fuel efficient. All it takes are making a few simple changes to the way we drive and using the right fuel,” explains Anthony Lawrence Yam, Pilipinas Shell Vice President for Retail.

“The Driving Challenge allows our participants to experience Shell FuelSave, and the Shell FuelSave Fact or Fiction Report shows Filipino motorists what they should and shouldn’t do when it comes to being more fuel efficient.” Yam added.

Ultimately, Shell wants to show everyday drivers that choosing the right fuel does not have to be a tough decision, and that Shell FuelSave is a good choice that they don’t have to think about. All motorists can be more fuel efficient by driving smarter and using the right fuel, such as Shell FuelSave – a regular priced fuel designed to last longer.

FEBRUARY 2015: A new study released today uncovers the extraordinary lengths Filipinos are willing to go to in order to save fuel and cut their driving costs.

The Shell FuelSave Fact or Fiction Report, which analyses the behaviour of 1,000 Filipino drivers aged 18 to 40, reveals that while 92%[1] see being fuel efficient as important, but 75% admit they don’t know how.

What’s even interesting, more than half (53%) of the drivers surveyed say they feel anxious trying to decide how best to save fuel, leading many to believe in a collection of absurd fuel saving myths. The research shows 80% of drivers believe warming up their engine before setting off will make them more fuel efficient, while 57% think filling up at night does the same trick. Shockingly, nearly half (45%) even believe ‘burping’ their cars to release air pockets in the tank will help them save fuel. Unfortunately for the majority of the Philippines’ driving population, none of these fuel efficiency myth help in reducing fuel costs.

Commenting on the findings, Anthony Lawrence Yam, Vice President for Retail of Pilipinas Shell, says: “The Shell FuelSave Fact or Fiction Report shows just how important saving fuel has become to motorists, along with the incredible ways they try to be more fuel efficient. Some of the beliefs revealed through the study were actually wasting fuel rather than helping to conserve it.”

To help sort fact from fiction, Shell is out to turn the nation’s myth-followers into fuel efficiency pros – both through using fuels like Shell FuelSave that are scientifically designed to last longer and by demonstrating more effective ways to drive smartly.

Drivers are looking to both scientists and engineers (79%) to help them save fuel and energy in the future, and Shell is calling on the next generation of Philippine science and engineering talent to lead the way. Five students from various universities competing in Shell Eco-marathon Asia 2015 teamed up with Bianca Gonzalez, crowned the Shell FuelSave Celebrity Driver of the Year in Shell Eco-marathon 2014, and went head to head with select media from the motoring and lifestyle beats to test the nation’s most-believed fuel saving myths and reveal the truth about fuel efficiency with a Fact or Fiction Driving Challenge on February 11. The complete Shell FuelSave Fact or Fiction Report was revealed in conjunction with the culmination of this event after the day’s drive full of pit stop challenges from the city of Manila north bound to Clark, Pampanga.

This test took place before the students compete against more than 150 teams from Asia and the Middle East in the world’s biggest fuel efficiency competition to be held on its second year in the country. Shell Eco-marathon challenges student teams to design, build and test ultra-energy efficient vehicles of tomorrow.

Bianca Gonzalez says: “As young Filipino scientists and engineers prepare to compete at Shell Eco-marathon, I want to help Shell inspireall motorists to learn how to drive more fuel efficiently. Is switching off your engine in stationary traffic more effective than keeping it running? Does a warm engine equal a more efficient engine? And can a car really burp? These are the questions that we will be aiming to answer.”

The Shell FuelSave Fact or Fiction Report also reveals that the confusion on the road is in stark contrast to what goes on inside the nation’s homes, where Filipinos conserve energy by limiting their electrical use but not their fuel consumption. Indeed, while 88% of people say they frequently turn off the lights to save energy when leaving the house, only 4 in 10 (42%) will frequently remove excess weight from their boot or backseat to make their vehicle lighter and effectively helping drivers to save on fuel.

About the Shell FuelSave Fact or Fiction Report

The Shell FuelSave Fact or Fiction Report was commissioned by Shell and conducted by independent research firm Edelman Berland in December 2014. It used an online questionnaire with a nationally representative sample of 1,000 Filipino drivers aged 18 to 40.

About Shell FuelSave

Shell FuelSave Unleaded and Shell FuelSave Diesel are our Regular priced fuels designed to last longer. Currently available in 23 countries, they contain active efficiency ingredients and are designed to improve engine efficiency from the very first tank.

About Shell Eco-marathon Asia

Shell Eco-marathon Asia will be held on the streets of Manila between 26 February and 1 March 2015. Approximately 150 teams from 18 countries, including 33 teams from the Philippines will be taking part.

Shell Eco-marathon began in 1939 at a Shell research laboratory in the United States as a friendly wager between scientists to see who could get the most miles per gallon from their vehicle. The winner barely achieved 50 mpg (21 km/l) and from these humble origins a more organised competition evolved. In 1985 in France, Shell Eco-marathon as we know it today was born. The inaugural Shell Eco-marathon Asia was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in 2010 before moving to the Philippines, in 2014.

Travel photographers capture Juan of a Kind stories

Travel photographers capture Juan of a Kind stories

I am a passionate travel blogger. I had the most amazing time of my life travelling the world before I was operated on ruptured Brain Aneurysm more than four years ago. I love meeting people be it here in the Philippines or abroad. I always travel like a local. I remember the first time I went to Bohol. I was at the Tagbilaran airport with no itinerary. I went out and chatted with several
tricycle drivers and was only charged with the "local fare" and was told to try a famous local restaurant. In General Santos City, I met and was adopted for a night by the assistant municipal treasurer Ate Melins in her house and was even toured to Manny Pacquiao's restaurant and Jinkee Pacquiao's boutique. And ate Melins and were treated to a free dinner by Kuya Gary, a restaurant owner in Gen San. We happened to learn during our conversation with his wife that Kuya Gary is the first cousin of the husband of my first cousin. What a small world!  In Palawan, I was adopted for two nights by a co-passenger and his family.  His whole family and I had a blast when I asked them to join me on my island tour. ( They are from Palawan but never had a chance to do an island tour, I am happy that I made them happy in my own little way).  In Tacloban, I was toured by Tita Ludette to the different famous landmarks in Leyte and even had a U-turn in Samar via the world-famous San Juanico Bridge. In Singapore, I entered a restaurant and engaged the owner and the chef in a conversation and I even celebrated New Year's eve with them. In a Thailand temple, I had a cultural exchange with one of the caretakers. Anyway, this space would not be enough if I summarize all the people whose lives I touched and who touched mine during my travel days. I think that is so cool. Right? I got to meet new amazing people and I think that is the best thing about traveling.

Tales from these chance meetings are what a group of travel photographers and storytellers are chronicling through Juan of a Kind Stories, ( A project of Cebu Pacific Air, this online initiative showcases snippets of people’s lives from different corners of the globe, celebrating travel, connections, differences in culture, and the candid encounters with people one can meet in one’s journeys. From the heartwarming to the humorous, each anecdote captures the aspirations, quirks and passions of people from various backgrounds.

Among the participating storytellers for Juan of a Kind Stories is travel photojournalist Lester Ledesma, who has been writing about and photographing Asia for over 14 years. “I like that Juan of a Kind Stories focuses on people and not the places. Travel is always more fulfilling if you meet somebody along the way,” said Lester. “This project gives our readers the experience of meeting someone from another place.”

Another storyteller, Aaron Articulo traveled to three Southeast Asian countries and 10 provinces in the Philippines the past few months, and met people from all walks of life, gender, race, religion, and social class. He shared, “It has made me realize that at the end of the day, we are all truly equal—we are human beings, with the same desires, same aspirations, and the same dignity.”

Places, people, perspectives
Capturing unique stories through photos and videos, while traveling, is nothing new for Lester and Aaron. But Juan of a Kind Stories remains an exciting and fascinating project for both because of the variety of subjects they meet.

Lester counted Peter Chua of Malaysia among his favorite subjects for Juan of a Kind Stories. “I was peeking into the window of a closed magic shop in Johor when a man—Peter—called out to me from a cafe. It turned out that he owned the store and was a famous magician in the city,” Lester shared.

His new friend regaled him with magic tricks right at the café and even invited him into his shop. “I filmed him performing the first trick he ever learned,” said Lester. “For a famous magician to give you a private show for one – man, that was quite an experience!”

Meanwhile, Aaron said that one of his most inspiring Juan of a Kind Stories was that of Trio, an 11-year-old professional surfer from Bali. “The boy came from a broken family and ran away from home at a young age. He starved for a few days on the streets, until a good Samaritan fed, clothed and adopted him, even though the man had his own children,” he shared.

Aaron added that Trio’s newfound father turned out to be a surf instructor in Kuta Beach. “When Trio was ‘old enough,’ he brought him to the beach and taught him how to surf. In a few months’ time, the boy became a professional surfer, won pro-level surfing competitions, and now teaches at their mini-surf school in Kuta Beach. It’s like Trio found new life at the beach,” Aaron recounted.

Lester and Aaron join other storytellers Ferdz Decena, Hub Pacheco and Jojo Pensica in discovering the wonderful stories of people from around the world. Visit and follow its official Facebook and Instagram pages (@JuanOfAKindStories) for more.

KAPITOLYO PASIG FOOD TRIP: Size Matters Sausage Burgers

KAPITOLYO PASIG FOOD TRIP: Size Matters Sausage Burgers

Yesterday, my blogger friends and I went to the Ground Floor of Ace Water Spa at United St., Kapitolyo, Pasig, not to try the water spa but to have some gastronomic adventure at #‎sizematterspasig.

Size Matters Sausage Burgers restaurant offers not your usual fastfood beef burger that gets smaller by the second. Size Matters Sausage Burgers restaurant serves gourmet sausage burgers. My number one pick is its Italian Burger Job “IBJ” ¼ lb that costs Php189. I was so excited when I took a bite because you could taste the freshly baked tasty bun, Italian sausage patty, sweet tasting caramelized onions, Monterey Jack, garlic cream cheese, lettuce and tomatoes in every bite. I am glad that it did not scrimp on the ingredients! Yey! Four of us shared this yummy invention.

I hardly ever give this rating but I think this deserves 5 fingers. So there you go, my first ever 5 fingers rating for a gourmet burger.

Next in line is the Breakfast in Bed “BIB” ¼ lb Php189.  At Size Matters Sausage Burgers you have an option to add on whatever you like such as Maple Bacon for only Php35, egg for Php10, and so on and so forth.

Instead of the usual bun, Size Matters Sausage Burgers uses English muffin for its Breakfast in Bed “BIB” burger.

When I took a bite, I tasted sweet caramelized onions, breakfast sausage patty, bacon, fried egg, American cheddar, lettuce, tomatoes and mayonnaise. It was good but not as good as "IBJ".

And the finale- The Works Burger 1/3 lb.

The last but definitely not the least burger will make bacon lovers very very happy. TWB burger is a bit salty for my taste. Maybe the salty taste comes from the cheese and bacon. The burger patties are huge, tender and very juicy. At 1/3 lb, it is definitely a steal at Php299.

Introducing the all-new Lord of the Onion Rings! It is good and simple. I love it with ketchup and mayo.

Size Matters Sausage Burgers crispy coated onion rings make an excellent appetizer or side dish. Onion rings are a more exclusive menu item, appealing to a narrower, more discerning customers. Thus, it is important to get the very best, right? Most of us will mindlessly gnaw away at the sleeve of tater twigs in front of us, even if they're not our fave. But a righteous ring is worth going out of your way for. I'd even argue that the rings are the thing that decides many a burger destination. Size Matters Sausage Burgers thinly sliced onion rings are less greasy that their counterparts. They taste good and taste even better when dip in bleu cheese which costs an extra Php40, but if you like to scrimp on food just use mayo.

Please note that the Lord of the Onion Rings is not yet included in the menu but you can order this. Just tell your server you want one.

Carbonara is one of my favorite dishes. I like the Size Matters Sausage Burgers version.

couldn't wait to bring my brother who is a carbonara snob at Size Matters Sausage Burgers. Let's see how he will react.

Fresh and yummy. Simple but tasty.

Chili wings on a hot afternoon. I love Size Matters Sausage Burgers version of buffalo wings as they are so tasty and meaty and the wings' three (3) parts are intact.

The service is top notch and fast.

It is clean and has tissue, water and soap. The flush is working too. I also love the fact that the owner provided hand sanitizer on each table.

Glory to the free wifi!

The restaurant could probably seat about 20 people and I appreciate the simple interiors. It is a diner with straightforward menu.

Its outside seating area transformed into de facto al fresco smoking area can accommodate up to 15 people.

I was amazed how a locally conceptualized store came up with so many yummy burger combinations. Yes, with an "s" because it doesn't have only one but several kinds of gourmet burgers. ‬Mind you, this joint don't offer the usual boring fast food small-sized burgers.

I think it is a plus that customers can even come up with their own burger combination. You could even choose your favorite root beer companion. My blogger friends and I had the best tasting root beer ever. Please go ask them the brand ha ha ha! It will give the number one root beer brand a run of its money. It is being offered for only Php65.

All of the burgers are sausage-based patties and sausages tend to be more flavorful at times than regular burger patties, so I’m happy about this. Size Matters’ Italian Burger Job satisfies and is filling, even if it’s just the ¼ lb.

Size Matters is open from 11am to 11pm Sun. to Thurs and 10am to 1am Fri. to Sat. ‪#‎sizematterssausageburgers‬

All the servings were huge and they really made my tummy full.

I encourage you and your friends to try out this joint. I can't help it, but I want to come back again soon for more of its gourmet burgers. The double patty burgers are big enough for 2 to 4 people depending on your appetite.

Overall rating:

All of its burgers are juicy and tasty especially with the mustard, ketcup and mayo they provide on every table. Definitely a must-try!

Luis said "Sorry guys, I did not come prepared to pose for the camera." He is a great stand-up comedian.
I won't deny it, though I am a Bicolana, I am a true blue Vilmanian. I truly adore ate Vi not only because of her acting skills and how she treats everyone but also how she raised such a fine young gentleman in Luis Philippe Santos Manzano.  Popularly known as "Lucky" when he was little, he now uses Luis Manzano as his official screen name.

So, I was not surprised the other day during the press conference of Luis Manzano's new season of Kapamilya Deal or No Deal show that 20 "Lucky" Star members composed of a teen heartthrob, beauty queen, comedian, character actor, sexy actress, and many more are to join Luis in his wacky antics and banters this coming February 9, 2015.

An all-new “Kapamilya Deal or No Deal” is coming your way this 2015 as host Luis Manzano returns with an diverse mix of popular personalities that will not only hold the briefcases that can change their lives but will also give them a chance to make a deal of a lifetime.

Winning the P1 million jackpot has never been this fun. Before the game starts, a roulette will determine who among the Lucky Stars will be the player for the day. The chosen player may opt to keep his or her briefcase or trade it with another Lucky Star. The bargaining begins and the player opens the briefcases in hopes of getting a big offer from the Banker.

This is the first time in all ‘Deal’ franchises around the world that the briefcase models will be replaced by popular personalities who will also serve as studio players.

Please don’t miss the premiere of the all-new “Kapamilya Deal or No Deal” beginning Monday (Feb 9) on ABS-CBN.
