UMBILICAL CORD BLOOD BANKING CAN SAVE LIVES

Attention: Expectant Parents

Cord blood banking is probably one of the most important long-term investments for your family's health. While it is crucial that your child's stem cells are processed and stored with the best methods possible, it is even more vital that you need a cord blood bank that would be with you for years to come, regardless of how uncertain times may be.

During pregnancy, the umbilical cord functions as a lifeline between mother and child. Years later, the blood present within the umbilical cord could offer hope for the child or other individuals in the family.
The umbilical cord blood is a rich source of haematopoietic stem cells (HSCs); cells responsible for replenishing blood and regenerating the immune system. HSCs are known as 'precursor cells', as they have the unique ability to differentiate into the different types of cells found in the body, namely:
  • Red Blood Cells - which transport oxygen
  • White Blood Cells - which produce antibodies and fight bacteria
  • Platelets - which assist blood clotting
Since 1988, UCB stem cells have been used to treat an increasing number of diseases. Today, this numbers more than 80, including blood and metabolic disorders, immunodeficiency ailments and autoimmune diseases. For a full list of treatable diseases, click here.
When transplanted into a patient, the haematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) migrate to the bone marrow and produce new blood cells, boosting the immune system. With the rapid advances in technology, the number of diseases treated by stem cell therapies is expected to increase.
Advantages of storing UCB stem cells are:
  • A guaranteed match for autologous transplants (where the donor and recipient are the same individual)
  • A readily available supply of stored HSCs. This compares well to having to do a national or international search which is costly and time-consuming in an already time critical situation.
  • Lower risk of Graft vs. Host Disease for autologous transplants, a situation where the transplanted tissue attacks the patients own tissue.
  • Ease of collection, which is pain-free and risk-free to both mother and child.
  • UCB stem cells are more vigorous, have a higher rate of engraftment and are more tolerant to tissue mismatches, compared to other types of stem cells, e.g. bone marrow.
The main intention for a stem cell transplant is the need to reconstitute a patient's blood and immune system, following treatments such as chemotherapy or radiotherapy, which destroys the blood cells. The HSCs are infused directly into the patient's blood stream, and subsequently migrate to the bone marrow.
Within the bone marrow environment, the HSCs are able to begin their differentiation into the three types of blood cells, thereby initiating the regeneration of the patient's blood and immune system.
The first umbilical cord blood transplant was performed in 1988 and resulted in the successful treatment of a 5-year old boy diagnosed with Fanconi Anaemia. To date there have been more than 14000 umbilical cord blood stem cell transplants reported worldwide.

Banking cord blood does not guarantee that the cells will provide a cure or be applicable in every situation. Use will be ultimately determined by the treating physician.
Last update 4th Aug 2011.

Studies have shown that cord blood stem cells can also be used for siblings and other members of your family who have a matching tissue type. Siblings have up to a 75% chance of compatibility, and the cord blood may even be a match for parents (50%) and grandparents.
Cord blood stem cells are currently used in the treatment of several life-threatening diseases, and play an important role in the treatment of blood and immune system related genetic diseases, cancers, and blood disorders
Saving our first-born's cord blood stem cells was a no-brainer for my husband and me. As new parents we want to be able to provide the best options we can for Noah; we'd also like to try and start preparing for his future. Cord blood banking does both for us. We don't know if or when we'll be needing the stored cord blood stem cells, but it gives us a sense of security and peace that, should we ever need it, the best solutions are available to us.

We chose CordLife for 2 reasons – their service quality and the fact that they have a facility in Manila. It just made a lot more sense to us and we're so happy we did it!

Type 1 diabetes

A clinical trial underway at the University of Florida is examining how an infusion of autologous cord blood stem cells into children with Type 1 diabetes will impact metabolic control over time, as compared to standard insulin treatments. Preliminary results demonstrate that an infusion of cord blood stem cells is safe and may provide some slowing of the loss of insulin production in children with type 1 diabetes
Cord blood banking was a completely new concept to me when I had my first child, but I had read up on it due to the fact that my mom was diagnosed with stage 3b cancer the year prior to my pregnancy – and I wanted to do my tiny part in perhaps saving a family member’s life down the line. With percentages high on potentially saving lives within my family – I knew that I wanted to do this for those I love more than life itself.

Singapore Storage Facility
Singapore is an ideal long-term storage place for your baby's cord blood unit because of its natural disaster-free location, political and socio-economic stability. Located in Singapore Science Park II, our cord blood processing laboratory is housed in the most prestigious research and development (R&D) and technology hub in the country.
Our AABB accredited facility is well equipped with 24/7 backup systems, which are further enhanced with remote alarm to alert our staff via phone if anything is amiss. Our equipment, critical materials and services also undergo stringent testing and certification regularly.
Your baby's cord blood will be stored in fire retardant and vacuum insulated double hull nitrogen tanks which can remain at optimal temperature for more than two weeks without replenishing liquid nitrogen.
As Singapore is geographically small and free from natural disasters, there is no real need to store your baby's cord blood in different locations. This unnecessary location transfer will only heighten the risks of exposing your baby's cord blood to heat, resulting in cellular damage and sample mix-up. It is CordLife's lifelong commitment to safeguard your baby's cord blood unit under the best storage conditions in the most secure and safest location in Singapore.

President Noynoy Aquino and Grace Lee are Officially Dating

President Benigno Aquino III finally broke his silence on the news that he is dating Korean television personality Grace Lee. "We're seeing each other," Aquino told ABS-CBN News. He did not provide further details, citing his constitutional right to privacy.

The news was first shared by controversial radio host Mo Twister, who is currently in the United States. He said on Twitter: "We are talking about Grace Lee's date last night with President Aquino. #itsmorefuninthephilippines."

This after a certain Adrian Abella tweeted Mo Twister: "Just asked Grace Lee if it's true that she had dinner with President Aquino. She said she did." Asked about the supposed date last week, Presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said: "We do not comment on private matters of the President."

Lee, for her part, denied a newspaper report claiming that she admitted dating Aquino. "I never said we dated. Nor did I say we are text mates. Nor that he comes to visit me," she said on Twitter.

Aquino first met 29-year-old Lee last year during the inauguration of the Korea Electric Power Corp. power plant in Cebu, where the latter was a co-host. "Pati ang bisita nating si Miss Grace Lee, kala ko tuloy Pinay, eh. Hindi nga pala, Korean. Pero pati 'yung mga Korean na dumarating talagang gwapa lahat. Kailangan yatang buhayin ang Malacañang sa Sugbu. Baka dito na rin tayo magkatuluyan," the President said in his speech during the event.

Aquino, 51, is said to be lucky during the Year of the Water Dragon, especially in the love department. "This year, he will have a love life if he is willing to get married... The First Lady is coming out," Hong Kong-based feng shui master Joseph Chau Kam Shing said early this month.

The bachelor President's past dates include celebrity stylist Liz Uy and stockbroker Len Lopez. He has also been linked to Bais City Mayor Karen Villanueva, Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia, actress Iza Calzado and Sabrina Chua of Singapore-based Channel News Asia. His former girlfriend, Valenzuela City councilor Shalani Soledad, recently tied the knot with Pasig City Rep. Roman Romulo.

Hey Daydreamer Rez Toledo, more popularly known as Someday Dream, composed 7 tracks in his album

It was a one of a kind experience for us bloggers to see Hey Daydreamer a.k.a. Rez Evia Toledo perform live. Yes, up close and personal!
Pop radio listeners for the past few months might have heard of a techno-driven pop ditty called "Hey Daydreamer."

Hey Daydreamer has been on the top of the music charts for quite sometime now.  Its infectious electro beats, rhythmic keys, and catchy tunes have caught the young listeners by storm. When it was revealed that the song was locally produced, reactions ranged from disbelief to a desperate desire to watch the artist live.

The guy behind the song is 21-year-old Ateneo de Manila student Rez Toledo, more popularly known as Somedaydream.

Rez Toledo said during the question and answer portion with the bloggers, that he formed Somedaydream almost three years ago, when he was 18 years old. And that he was heavily influenced by the likes of Owl City and The Secret Handshake. He had a few songs and then he started to regained interest in playing the piano. But then he decided to buy a synthesizer. From there he started experimenting with the electronic genre, with the use of laptop synthesizers, recording his own songs.

He put up his songs at his MySpace page. The songs became popular among his friends and peers. Before he knew it, his output fell on the ears of former Hale singer Champ Lui Pio, who in turn became interested in helping Rez Toledo.

Help came in the form of producing his album, and eventually it expanded to managing Somedaydream.
After a while, Champ had thought of putting up a label and then put him under Mecca Music label. Mecca Music recently released the official music video for "Hey Daydreamer."

His second single, 'Delivery Boys', was released in August 2011.

Someday Dream, Rez's screen name, is the title of his album produced by Mecca Music and MCA Music.

It contains seven self-composed songs, which he said are based on his personal experiences.

"In 1st year college everything was new--I had new friends, I had new experiences," he relates.

"Hindi ko naman kinakahiya na personal experiences 'yon talaga, siguro I just draw inspirations from personal stuff, and my art reflects who I am."
Here's the complete track list of Rez's album, Someday Dream:

1. Prelude

2. Hey Daydreamer

3. Do-do With You

4. Delivery Boys

5. Break

6. Sing This Song

7. Hey Daydreamer (Acoustic)

His group of fans call themselves "Dreamers". His single "Hey, Daydreamer" is used in the Cornetto Disc Commercial Philippines. He was born on November 28,1990.
The first grand Bloggers’ Meet Up with OPM’s hottest young artist and internet sensation SOMEDAYDREAM was made possible by MCA Music Inc. and Mecca Music in cooperation with Astroplus, Pinoy song magazine and Orange Magazine TV.

Asia’s acoustic sweetheart SABRINA releases “I Love Acoustic 4” album—her version of the hit “Moves Like Jagger”

Last night I met in person Asia’s acoustic sweetheart SABRINA ORIAL or simply SABRINA  who releases her follow-up single from her highly successful “I Love Acoustic 4” album—her version of the hit “Moves Like Jagger”.

Sabrina is only 22 years old . She graduated Cum Laude from UP Los Banos with a degree in Communication Arts. Sabrina is an achiever and an ideal role model for kids of this generation. She doesn't smoke and she always exercise.  She was discovered at the tender age of 14 and was asked to come back after two years by Vicor who released her first album as a Bossa singer entitled "Sabrina".
She came from a family of musicians. Her Father and brother are guitar experts/composerHer older sister is a soprano. Her mother is an alto and a magna cum laude. No wonder Sabrina got not only her looks but also her intelligence. Their family usually spent weekends singing and playing the guitar together.  She described her family as a happy musical family.

Her “I Love Acoustic 4” turned GOLD in Indonesia in November of 2011 and this month, it is certified double PLATINUM. This makes Sabrina one of the few Filipino singers to have multi-platinum success in Indonesia. “I Love Acoustic 4” was also released in Thailand and soon in Singapore and Malaysia.
Sabrina has the following albums under her belt
  • "Sabrina"
  • “I Love Acoustic”,
  • “I Love Acoustic Too”
  • “I Love Acoustic 3”
  • “I Love Acoustic 4”
They were multi-platinum success in Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand- the only Filipino female singer to break in successfully in the South East Asian market.

Her huge following abroad is now translating locally as the album is still in retail charts where it debuted at #1 at Astroplus and #9 at Odyssey upon its first week of release. Because of her success abroad, she became a recipient of the “International Achievement Award” at the recent Awit Awards where she also took home the I-Gateway Mobile Philippines, Inc.’s Most Downloaded Artist for 2010.
The album also includes the tracks “Price Tag,” “Who Says”, “Edge of Glory”, “On The Floor”, “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)”, “California King Bed”, “Hold It Against Me”, “Rolling In The Deep”, “The Lazy Song”, “Back To December”, “That Should Be Me”, “Marry Me”, “Rocketeer”, “Just The Way You Are” featuring Indonesian singer Calvin Jeremy and “Lucky” featuring multi-platinum crooner Richard Poon.

Catch Sabrina as she serenades SM Pasig on February 17 (Friday) at 4pm. Those who will buy her album “I Love Acoustic 4” will get to have their CDs autographed by Sabrina herself after the show.

Let us support our Filipino artists!
“I Love Acosutic 4” by Sabrina is now out in CDs under MCA Music (Universal Music Philippines) and available for download at mymusicstore.com.ph.

CHRISTIAN BAUTISTA DEPORTED FROM INDONESIA

Oh no! Our very own singer Christian Bautista who is hugely popular in Indonesia has been deported from Indonesia for working there using his visiting visa according to the Jakarta Post.

The immigration office found him conducting a show at Lippo Karawaci, Tangerang west of Jakarta without a working visa on Wednesday evening.

A spokesman of the immigration directorate general, was quoted by tribunnews.com as saying:
“We will deport him this (Friday) afternoon"
Christian had a 30-day visiting visa since Wednesday but apparently used the opportunity to hold a concert on the day he arrived in Indonesia.

Bautista, who rose to fame in Indonesia with the hit single “The Way You Look at Me”, was questioned by immigration officers  from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Friday.

LITO LAPID'S WIFE MARISSA ARRESTED IN THE US

US authorities arrested Marissa when she arrived in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Jan. 15, 2012.

According to the account supplied by the Lapid camp, she entered the United States in November 2011 carrying $50,000, in violation of US travel regulations. She was held but was released on bail, and managed to leave the country before a US court could detain her to stand trial for the offense.

US laws allow foreigners to carry up to $10,000 in cash. Foreigners must declare the money they are carrying beyond that amount, which Marissa failed to do.

Based on Friday’s currency exchange rates, Marissa had P2.1 million with her when she was arrested.

‘Just nervous’
Lapid said his wife was not aware that the case against her had prospered until she flew back to Las Vegas on Jan. 15.

“I’m sad. She had no intention to lie to authorities. She was just nervous,” he said.
Lapid said reports that he and his wife often traveled to Las Vegas to socialize or gamble were “untrue.”

“We stay with a friend, Edgar Balagtas, or with my mother (whenever we go to the United States),” he said.

Lapid said he had not been able to speak with Marissa by phone for days now because her American lawyer, Eliot Krieger, had told her not to take calls.

He said that they did talk on Jan. 15 and that she had mumbled, “Sorry Jo.” (Jo is their term of endearment.)

The senator also said he had asked the Department of Foreign Affairs to extend assistance to his wife the way it did to Filipinos in distress overseas.

Various businesses
He said their youngest son, Maynard, 27 and an American citizen, had been assisting his mother. (They have four children, including Mark Lapid, who served as governor of Pampanga and now heads the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority of the Department of Tourism.)

According to employees, Marissa Lapid owns and runs MTL Enterprises, which includes Walmart Construction Supply, Maynards’ Agri Farm Supply, Barstow Minimart, Generics Pharmacy and Porac Ice Plant.

Except for the grocery, these businesses occupy a row of stalls in a one-story building beside the district hospital in Barangay Babo Sacan in Porac.

When the Inquirer asked an employee who owned a Sea Oil fuel station in Barangay Sta. Cruz, he said: “It’s by Sen,” apparently referring to the senator.

Some 20 meters from the municipal hall is Marissa Hall, which the senator’s wife rents out for private or public functions.

The Porac Foundation Inc. (PFI) has sued Marissa for buying the 5,435-square-meter property from a couple who allegedly produced two fake titles for it. Fr. Resty Lumanlan, PFI chair and founder, said the property was part of donations to the foundation.

Another source said Marissa recently bought two lots in Porac from the David and Cuyugan families worth P20 million.

The Porac treasurer declined the request for information on business permits issued in the name of Marissa Lapid or her relatives.

Research conducted by the Inquirer in 2005 showed that of the family’s 17 vehicles that year, 14 were in Marissa’s name.

Undeclared properties
Lapid declared a net worth of P10.1 million in 2004, his first year in the Senate. Seven properties titled to him were estimated at P256 million, excluding a house in San Diego, California.

Many of the family’s properties in the Philippines were allegedly not declared in Lapid’s statements of assets and liabilities and net worth (SALN) in 1995-2004, when he was Pampanga governor.

What were allegedly not declared in the 2003 SALN when his net worth was P10.1 million were a hilltop mansion in Porac and the three-story Mar-Man Building on Scout Borromeo Street in Quezon City.

Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) documents show that Lapid is a co-owner of Classic Films International and Mar-Man Farms Corp. None of these reported big profits.
The film company reported losing P5.49 million in 1996. Mar-Man, registered in 1993, has not filed financial statements in the SEC. The Lito Lapid College Foundation, set up in 1992, reported a net loss of P1.2 million in 1998.

Marissa Lapid’s Thousand Islands International, registered in 1997, had a paid-up capital of only P137,000, and GM Concrete Products Manufacturing and Trading Co., co-owned by Lapid, P1.8 million.

Not born wealthy
In his campaign for a seat in the Senate in 2004, Lapid reported spending P64.9 million from contributions.

Neither husband nor wife was born wealthy, according to Inquirer sources. Neither went to college after graduating from high school.

They married when he was still a movie stuntman. She is known in Porac as having stuck with him despite his affairs with some of his leading ladies in action movies.

Former Gov. Eddie Panlilio has sued Lapid, his son Mark and three other Pampanga officials for plunder, accusing them of enriching themselves using the province’s quarry funds.

The Lapids were cleared of the complaint.                                                     Source: Inquirer
